coding applications for the iPad and PC
code.org
Code.org is a site that was created by Hadi Partovi to inspire students to pursue coding. Go to Code.org to explore how easy it is to have your students start coding. There is a video on the homepage that has programers talk about their early experiences with coding and why it is so important. This site also has many fun activities for your students to do while learning to code.
In Virginia there are over 34,000 open computing jobs and only about 1,500 graduates in Computer Science. Our state is currently working on Computer Science SOLs for all grades. Code.org makes learning code fun for students. It also helps students develop their problem solving skills.
There are courses for each level from K-12. The courses for younger students are like puzzles but still teach the basics of coding. Once they have learned the basics they can experiment with making their own game.

coding and kahoot
Kahoot and Code.org have partnered to produce some Kahoots to help you learn more about Computer Science and why it is important to teach in our schools. Enjoy learning about Computer Science. Then make your own account at Code.org. Try one of the courses yourself.
Code Spark
Code Spark is a Coding app designed for younger children. The codes are simple and reading isn't required. The teacher must set up an account and class. Then connect the iPad to your class. Next let the students explore! This app runs on iOS devices with version 7.0 or higher and Android devices with 2.3.3.
tynker
Tynker is an app for iOS and Android that takes the students through different coding exercises. The student needs to be able to read for this game. They will have to read the directions and the different block codes. There are 2 free sections and many others that cost.
scratch jr
Scratch Jr is also available for the iPad or Android devices. It requires very little reading and is mostly images of moving forward, backwards, turning and jumping so this one is also good for younger children. It is a place for students to create but it doesn't have instructions like the teaching applications such as Code.org or Code Spark.
scratch
Scratch is a website devoted to helping children experiment with coding characters to do a variety of things. MIT created the site and it uses Flash so the PC is the best place to use it. Students who have been taught the coding block language first will have more success in Scratch. Scratch lets you set up classes and project areas for the students to share their projects.
